Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme

Our member Jenny is currently taking some time off of her sports diver training to work with the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme.

The programme studies the whale shark population within South Ari Atoll, Maldives, to gather as much data as possible to further understand and protect this endangered species. Whale sharks are the biggest fish in the sea, and can be over 12m long. However they have been classified as endangered since 2016, due to the historic hunting of these animals for liver oil, and the illegal demand for their fins.

Being out in the Maldives, means there is a lot of diving opportunity and some wonderful sites to explore. The MWSRP has an upcoming expedition if you might be interested…

“MWSRP has chartered a liveaboard from October 30th to November 10th and we invite you to join our team on board. The plan is to build on last years trip with a longer and more flexible expedition focusing on whale sharks and other marine megafauna. There are 18 spaces available and they are open to anyone with a passion for marine life! Contact us on [email protected] for an application form. We hope to see you there!”
